"Transient Film Exchange has developed fantastically effective strategies for engaging hard to reach young people, as it demonstrated in a detached project working with disaffected young people on a large estate. They were able to catch the young people's imagination and then sustained their commitment over a two month project, to produce a video report on life on the estate that has been used as an important piece of consultation evidence in developing further programmes for a local community in challenging circumstances."

Training and Workshops

Transient Film Exchange offers group-based drama and filmmaking activity for young people mainly from disadvantaged backgrounds that develops participants' abilities by involving them in using video equipment creatively. In the communications age, where a constant stream of visual information is generated, over which most of us have little control, using filmmaking techniques can be a particularly pertinent way of shifting the balance of power and of opening up channels of communication for marginalised people. We are happy to run such programmes in and around London to suit the needs of the group.

The focus of the projects has been to not only release the creativity and energy that exists within our clients but to engage them in a constructive learning process. This will enhance their talent to its full potential, so that the quality work they produce will give them a powerful voice, increase their self-esteem and develop skills giving them a head start when competing for jobs in the creative and communications industries or going into further education. It will also help them build on relationships with their social environments through collaborative work.

Current Workshops

On Monday nights Transient Film Exchange works in partnership with the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea's Youth Arts Team to deliver music video workshops as part of the broader Music Academy programme where participants are supported to create their own music. This scheme is open to young people from anywhere in London.

On Wednesday nights, Transient Film Exchange works in partnership with the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea's Accreditations Team to deliver filmmaking workshops to young people at East Chelsea Youth Club. This is funded by the Youth Opportunities Fund and is open to young people from anywhere in London. Young people also have the chance to gain accreditation through the programme. For further information please contact Jane O' Sullivan. The film Grave Mistake was produced by young people attending these sessions.

Through the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea's Positive Choices fund Transient Film Exchange has been able to develop and run the Cooking Challenge programme, where young people get to learn about healthy eating, various ingredients and a number of recipes before producing and presenting their own show as well as getting to try new dishes. Please check back for details of the next programme schedule.

Transient Film Exchange has been working with the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea's Connexions and Youth Sports Development in order to deliver training and filmmaking opportunities to young people with learning difficulties and disabilities. Transient Film Exchange was commissioned to help one such group to produce a film highlighting the borough's progress at the Balfour Beatty London Youth Games.
